People-pleasing is ultimately an act of self-abandonment. You're abandoning your own judgment, your own needs, your own voice in deference to what you imagine others want or need. This is what happens when your sovereign—the part of you that leads your own life—is deflated. You don't trust your own judgment about what's right for you. So you outsource that authority to other people. You let them decide what's acceptable for you. You check in with them before making decisions. You prioritize their needs over your own because deep down you don't believe your needs matter as much.
This creates a particular kind of powerlessness. Because you're not leading your own life—you're following everyone else's. And you're resentful about it, because part of you knows this is backwards. Part of you wants to matter. But your deflated sovereign doesn't trust that you're allowed to prioritize yourself.
People-pleasing reflects a deflated sovereign that has abandoned its own authority in deference to others.
